Better Questions

Todd Agnew's new album, Better Questions, is being released in a week, and I for one, can't wait. I have heard him in concert, and he is the most humble and honest guy....a messy, vulnerable Christian, willing to share his struggle with others.

So far the fame hasn't caught up with him, maybe he won't go the way of other "Christian" recording artists who get caught up in their own press. The ministry and message he has is awesome. Take a look at what he has to say about the album. If you haven't had a chance to hear his stuff - take a risk - buy it. You won't be sorry!

Well, the release of the new record, Better Questions, better known in our circles as BQ, is only a week away. We are excited to finally share it with everyone. We have been working on it since January, and all the hard work has paid off. Well, I guess you will actually be the judge of that. So, anyway, it's called Better Questions. And that doesn't mean that I have better questions than anyone else. It doesn't mean we should ask better questions. As you will discover in the first line of the record, it simply means that I have better questions than I have answers.

Somewhere along the line, someone decided that Christian musicians belonged in the same all-knowing leadership position as pastors and the like. However, having been both a musician and a church staff member, I can tell you that neither group has it all together. We are all just human, struggling to find out what it means to love and obey our God. None of us has all the answers. I just wrote a song you liked. Or maybe not. But either way, I'm just a fellow traveler in this life who is willing to share what I've learned, but I'm no more of an authority than you on things spiritual.

So rather than record another album of attempts at answering spiritual issues, I decided to treat you as my family and share an album of my questions. Well, actually, the Lord planned the album. These are just the songs I have right now. To be honest, when I started writing them, I assumed the first few would just stay in my closet, the way "My Jesus" did for 8 years. But as I continued to struggle with these things and continued to write songs, I realized that God was going to display my closet for all to see. So we deal with some real issues in this record; death, divorce, peace, church, sin, and a lot more.

But don't go buy the record to find the answers to your hard questions, because they're not there. I'm not informing you of my opinion. I'm just sharing my own struggles. And I believe that we can take this journey together. A journey of Better Questions.

-Todd

OK Mike, here ya go.....8 Random Things Meme

I was a volleyball player years ago. Still love the game…..

I was very involved in Student Government in high school. Secretary of the Student Council my sophomore year.

I was a band geek. And proud of it. Played the flute.

My first love tho was choir. High School and College. Survived the college auditions – and didn’t really realize what an accomplishment that was. To this day I still love being in a choir.

I was a business major in college. I absolutely hated my computer classes. So where did I end up? Computer lab of an elementary school. LOL. And I love computers now….

The beach, any beach, but preferably Caribbean, is where I am the happiest. Well, a beach on the ocean – lakes don’t count! With a book, a sea breeze, warm sand and a cold drink.

I am a huge history buff. (With the exception of the civil war era. Hate it.) I tried watching the history channel one night when I couldn’t sleep hoping to bore myself, but that was a big mistake. Hours later I was still totally engaged.

My college room mate and I married brothers…..

Now I'm supposed to tag 8 people, but I don't wanna. If you feel like playing - feel free. I'd love to learn more about you. I just don't want to make you feel obligated.
I'm playing cuz turn about is fair play and I've tagged Mike many times......

iPod Shuffle Meme......

Julie tagged me again. So did Mike. Julie's is easy. I'll answer hers for now.... :)
Here are the rules. Just write down the first 10 songs that your iPod plays when it’s on shuffle. My songs -

1. Reservoir - Hem I love this relatively new, indy group. Check 'em out!

2. Nobody Loves Me - Derek Webb Derek has a NEW album out - The Ringing Bell and I just got it! Soooooo excited!

3. I Wouldn't Take Nothing for my Journey - Ricky Van Shelton A hold over from my country days. And when I wanna hear some good ole fashioned country gospel.

4. All For You - Big Daddy Weave They also do one of my all time favorite songs - Fields of Grace. I use it as my signature line! I'd use it for my ring tone if I could get it!

5. The End of My Pirate Days - Mary Chapin Carpenter MCC is my traveling companion. For night driving when I am feeling in a mellow mood. Love this girl!

6. Here Comes Suzy Snowflake - Rosemary Clooney This is a fun, fun song that takes me back to Christmas time and Garfield Goose when I was growing up.... :)

7. Somewhere North - Caedmons' Call This song is good, but you have to listen to their Share the Well Album....

8. Bad Moon Rising - Creedence Clearwater Revival What can I say? It's Creedence!

9. On the Street - Rent Soundtrack

10. Any Moment; Moments In The Woods Into the Woods Soundtrack

And, can I just say, how unlikely is it that not one single James Taylor or Todd Agnew song showed up on these 10? Not ONE??? James Taylor is - and always will be - my man. And I have already pre-ordered Todd's new CD - Better Questions.
BTW while I'm on my Todd Agnew soapbox, THIS is why I like him.....

There’s an axiom that should apply in so many areas where we live our lives, be it classroom or boardroom or family room.

“There’s no such thing as a dumb question.”

But there’s one place where this idea tends not to apply. So many -- young and old, male and female, seeker and believer alike -- run into opposition of asking the tough questions in the one place they should feel most free, the church.
Todd Agnew wants to help put a stop to that. Through his travels as a recording artist and performer, he has seen it start to happen on its own.

“I’m just finding more and more people who aren’t fooled by the ‘everything’s fine’ version of Christianity,” the Texas-bred Memphis resident says. “I’m just trying to just get some of those questions out there, the questions people are afraid to ask in church, but also to get the questions asked sincerely and without anger.”
Which brings Agnew to this place in time and art, using his platform and talent to get to the core of who we are as humans, to get to that moment where we’re able to ask the Better Questions:

What happens when you die?
Why do we define people by their mistakes?
How does God still care for us when we keep messing things up?

Todd Agnew’s willingness to stand up and provide perspective and voice to this and more doesn’t come from a place of anger or defiance, but rather from the experiences of a man continuing to wrestle with the very questions he poses.
From his debut Ardent release Grace Like Rain to the sophomore explorations of Reflection of Something to the epic nature of last year’s seasonal effort Do You See What I See? to the present-day realities of Better Questions, there is a deepening lyrical maturity displaying confidence while still maintaining power and edge.
This set of songs came to Todd with a clarity with which even he was surprised.
“We had planned to do a live worship record next after the Christmas record,” Todd says. “But after taking some time off, I’d written a bunch of new songs. I went into the management office and said, ‘Um, I need to tell you about some things.’
“I went in with my pitch that I needed to do a studio record, to be called ‘Better Questions,’ here’s the reasoning behind it, and here are the songs, all of it,” he continues. “They said, ‘Well, we were going to tell you we thought you needed to do a studio record, too,’ So I thought, ‘Wait, then, I didn’t need to do all this work leading up to this?’”

“We started with the idea of doing a real simple record, musically. I’d just finished the Christmas record and it was so big; there was orchestra on every single song, and it’s just this epic thing,” Todd notes. “So my thought was, ‘Let’s do a record with a drummer, a guitar player, a bass player and some keyboards.’ So that’s how we started...but we definitely strayed from that. As we started meshing the creativity and the simplicity together, sometimes the simplicity fell away.”

That creativity, that exploration of various sounds and styles -- be it rock of “Still Has A Hold,” the groove of “Least of These,” the lightheartedness of “Funny” or the reinvention of Rich Mullins’ piano-driven “Can I Be With You” -- weaves in tightly to the singer/songwriter nature of some of the other tracks, giving Better Questions a sonic diversity that holds the listener’s attention while maintaining that reflective thread the overall theme requires.

“For me, it meant going some different directions sonically, like having more keyboards on a record than ever before. We used loops for the first time, which had always been a real ‘anti-Agnew’ kind of thing, like ‘I don’t need computers to play music for me!’” Todd laughs.

“That’s the great thing about working around these guys who’ve been in the studio for so long. You put in a CD and play something, and they’ll go, ‘Aw, man, that’s a Gretsch hollow body through an old Vox AC30,’” he continues. “So where the second record was about exploring and learning how to make all the music that had influenced me, this time it was about leaving that stuff at the core and doing a lot of creative stuff around it.”

For Todd, the merging of the project’s theme and the creative drive behind it manifests most noticeably in the song “If You Wanted Me,” asking a litany of questions within an approachable musical habitat. “It may be my favorite song I’ve ever written, because I got to the last line and it wrapped it all up in that one line, ‘If You wanted me to be like You, why did You make me like me?” Todd notes.
“Musically, it’s a unique combination. For example, the drummer played all her parts with her hands. She’s on a regular drum kit, but she’s tapping the drums with her hands and hitting the cymbals with her fingers, so it’s this little, intricate rhythm that she ties in with the bass player,” Todd says. “But at the end of recording the song, we got the guitar player to go in and create all these feedback loops, then we put that behind their simple rhythm. So you hear the feedback and expect the rhythm to come crashing through, but it just subtly comes in and moves you along.”
“But this song also deals with the danger of the format we’ve been taught in writing for this genre: you can present any question you want, as long as you answer it 30 seconds later,” Agnew says. “I’ve started to think, ‘But what about the questions you can’t even ask in three minutes? And what about the questions you can’t answer at all? What about the questions you have to have God for? What about the things in our lives that are so devastating and so unexplainable that we can’t get our arms around them? Should we leave them out of our art?’”

“When we ask questions, God gives us answers, but they’re answers that are going to help draw you to Him, not answers that are going to help you be right,” he continues. “He’s not going to give you the answer that will let you think, ‘Oh, I’ve got it all figured out now,’ He’s going to give you the answer that is going to pull you in to Him, because that’s what you need.

“We’ve kind of developed this idea that says Christians can’t be challenged by art, they can’t be made to think about anything, we can’t have lyrics that are more than two syllables long, you can’t directly quote stuff out of the Bible because it’s going to go over their heads,” Agnew says. “But my thoughts are, if they’ve connected with some of the things I’ve done in the past, then they’re probably asking some of these same questions.
And I can’t help those people by giving them the answer, because I don’t know the answer. But I can help them in letting them know that they’re not alone in asking the questions. The church, as a body, can ask those questions, and we may or may not end up finding the answers, but we can walk that path together.
And for Todd Agnew, an artist willing to stand up and make the music he’s called to make while simultaneously making the points he’s compelled to make, just getting the questions asked in the first place is an encouraging first step down that path.
WOW! All that from a meme!!!!!

Objection! ......sustained.

Witness. Ever thought about that word? You hear it all the time in relation to Christianity. And it often seems to come across negatively to unbelievers. Why? I think it’s because of how Christians have twisted the meaning. By witness, believers try to cram what they believe down some one else's throat. They witness about their belief. What they know to be true. They parrot what they’ve been taught…..
Uh, wait – would that be allowed in court? In court a witness is not allowed to use speculation, hearsay or belief when they testify. They are only allowed to speak of what they have seen, heard, or experienced firsthand. Wow. So, when we witness, if we use the accepted use of the word, this means we are only allowed to speak of what we have seen, heard or experienced ourselves. Experience is a scary word in evangelical circles. For whatever reason. But doesn’t it make sense, if we are speaking to others about Christ, that we need to recount our experience? Tell our story. Our story. How can we speak to things that we have no concept of? We can say “I have heard”, or “the Bible says”, but the impact is so much greater when we tell our story, our experience, how we have seen evidence of God at work in our world and life. It has much greater impact when others can see for themselves the working of God in our lives. Standing on a street corner yelling through a bullhorn, or brow beating a friend, pummeling them with verses and platitudes over dinner is not acceptable. That is not the way to make our case, prove our point, or win anything. In our courts or in God’s.
That’s just what I’m thinking about today…….

How to see Three Texas Airports in Seven Hours.....

OK - Kelsey is flying around SOMEWHERE. She is on the way home from her road trip with Jen. I think right now she is on her way to Austin. Her 4:50 pm flight from Lubbock to Dallas was delayed because the Dallas airport was CLOSED due to weather. They actually boarded the plane and taxied to the runway before returning to the gate and having to get off the plane. And then they sat in the airport for hours. She finally got into Dallas at 9:30 pm - but that was 5 minutes after her connecting flight to Chicago took off.

So off she went to figure out plan B. However, because of the backlog there were no available flights out of Dallas until Friday. So the airline put her on a plane to Austin. (Nothing like seeing ALL of the TX airports, eh? - Wait, I should knock on wood, or she'll end up in Houston next....)

That was all I knew last night. Fortunately she called me and continued the story.....
When she got to Austin she was supposed to take a shuttle to a hotel, at least that was the plan. But she got in there around midnight with nothing but the clothes on her back (thank goodness for hotel toiletries..) and the shuttles don't run after 11:00. So she had to get a cab to her hotel. This morning she had to manage to get back to the airport in time for her flight home. That meant leaving the hotel by 5:30 am. Surprise! Too early for the shuttle. So once again she had to take a cab. This time the hotel picked up the tab. Kelsey said the people in Austin are really nice and really helpful. I've never been to Austin, I'd like to visit sometime. Anyway, she made it to the airport and after messing around and having to go through the security lines twice, she finally got to the gate and on the plane to Chicago.
In the middle of this mess, Kim flew out of Chicago to NY, leaving me to go to Midway and pick up Kelsey. And I DON'T DO AIRPORTS!! Drive there I mean. I avoid it at all costs. I hate the crowds and the signs are confusing. But it actually was quite simple and I survived. LOL.
Kelsey got in around 9:30, but we had to wait until the first flight in from Dallas to get her luggage. It was the first bag off the carousel. About time something went her way!!
Good grief. Someday we'll all laugh.
I think.

Where'd my red dots go??

Well, how do you like that? Cluster Maps just archived all the old maps and started over. Apparently for me on June 17. That's just sad. My poor map looks very bare and lonely. I kinda got used to seeing my dots growing.....
Evidently they archive the old maps at their site..
Wait, I'll go get it so I can look at it again....

In contrast - see how lonely the new one looks?

OK guys - get busy. Make me feel better. Visit me and watch the dots grow! :)

Oh - and if it hasn't happened to you yet, just wait. It will.

The end of the story.....

Well - at last the end of the road trip. I'm sure there will be good stories to tell later. :)
They arrived in Lubbock around 3:30 am Sunday. Fitting - since they left here at 3 am Thursday. Kelsey called Sunday evening. They were running around doing things - well, after giving Clayton a bath. Poor thing - three and a half really long days of dust, mud, mountains, wind, hot sun - and they never let him bathe????
Anyway here's the proof - a tired, sunburned, but still smiling Kelsey at the Texas state line. :D

Further Adventures

Well, I tried to talk to Kelsey and Jen when they called tonight, but, honestly, I only got about every 7th sylable. I told 'em to call later when they were no longer driving through mountains in CO. LOL.
Anyhow - they are still alive and well and headed for New Mexico tomorrow. Here's an updated map from todays journey, culminating around Estes Park, Co. Or at least that's the plan right now!
Somehow I just know there's gonna be a good story when the trip is done. I'll let you know!

A tooth, a trip, a tired mom.....

Well, Carissa had her tooth implant (two implants) surgery today. Now begins the recovery process. She can't bite with the temporary caps, and she can't chew with them for awhile. Then she can't bite anything hard for 3 months. That's worse than the restrictions she had with her braces. After that she will get her permanent teeth. Long haul. But it'll be worth it. She pretty much slept the day away, and a couple friends came over to watch movies with her tonight. I just sent her off to bed with her icepack and more pain meds.
Kelsey and Jen left at 3:00 am for Texas (by way of Minnesota and South Dakota....)

I talked to them around 5 or so when they rolled into Sioux Falls. The only reason Kelsey called was to taunt me with the fact that they were eating at Sonic....
Last night while we were packing up Jen's jeep we watched the Space Shuttle streak across the sky, followed by the space station. That was pretty cool.
Yep - I'm starting to ramble. Combination of tiredness, stress, concern for my kids and just sheer exhaustion. Guess I'll just head for bed.
Hope all is well in your corner of the world!

Time to quit partying and start thinking.....

I've been far too busy to think, much less post. I did start thinking about a post last night as I was reading - but it's only half formed. You're just gonna have to wait..... ;)

I think the parties are finally over. For me that is. I am absolutely partied out. Out of time, energy and money. And the ability to sit in a circle and talk to the SAME people for yet another four hours.....LOL. Seriously, Brad and Jess, thanks for inviting us to your parties!!

In church yesterday we were talking about denial. What things we don't wanna admit - and why. The things we just don't want to see out of fear of what that might mean in our lives. Great topic for Father's Day, eh? Anyway, Mike asked what we are in denial about and why. Wow. That's sobering. Convicting too. I was thinking that I have been wrestling with love - for a while now. Some of you know this. True Christ like love. Loving others, the unlovable. Why it is so hard. Why I struggle. Loving people that I really don't like. The ones that truly push my buttons. The convicting part wasn't in the admission of the problem, the facing up to the denial, it was WHY it was so hard to face the facts. Basically, because John says in First John 4:
7Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. 8Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 11Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.

13We know that we live in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. 14And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. 15If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in him and he in God. 16And so we know and rely on the love God has for us.
God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him. 17In this way, love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment, because in this world we are like him. 18There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.

19We love because he first loved us. 20If anyone says, "I love God," yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen. 21And he has given us this command: Whoever loves God must also love his brother.

Love is the manifestation of belief in God. Refusing to love - isn't that the same as rejecting God? Instead of "you might be a redneck if", it's "you might not be a Christian if...." And that's why I am in denial. This love thing is tough. Working on it. Admitting it is half the battle. Now I have to figure out how to live this way......

...you shall know the truth,
and the truth will set you free." John 8:32

It's over except for the clean-up

Things have been totally chaotic around here lately. Insanely busy. Finally it's all over - well except for the cleanup. The grad party was fun! Lots of incredibly yummy food - thanks to Dana, and lots of good friends to share it with. But I do remember why I don't do big parties very often.... :) I think I was on my feet for 36 hours straight - well with only about 6 hours somewhere in the middle to sleep. I feel like I have been run over by a steam roller - how many muscles can you possibly use to prepare food and clean a house? It's days like this I'm glad I only have two feet - not four like the puppy. Two hurting is bad enough. Oh - and the other thing about parties? It's like, how much money can one possibly spend in one week? LOL
And in between all the prep - including carpet cleaning - we had three doctor/dentist appointments. One of which was to set up Carissa's oral surgery in 10 days. But I digress.
Exhausted as I am, the party was a great celebration of Rachelle and Carissa's accomplishments, and a good time for us adult friends to get together and talk - which we never seem to find time to do otherwise. Now it's the morning after - Jenn and Chris are off to work, Kels, Carissa and Jess are sleeping, and I am trying to work up the energy to walk into the kitchen and start washing the mountain of dishes......
Anyway, that's where I've been all week.........

How does my garden grow?

I am so behind. I don't have a single thing done in my yard and today is June 1st!! The biggest bummer is that I don't have any tomatoes planted. That my friends is a tragedy. A true catastrophe. Well, not really in comparison to Darfur or sex trafficking.... But to me, here in my little world, the lack of fresh, ripe, warm, summertime tomatoes.... Any other vegis I can live without, tho cucumbers would be a close second. And flowers - pshaw - if I don't have 'em, I don't have to water em. Ok, ok - I like flowers, I just am a bit flower challenged - I kill 'em all.
I guess I should bite the bullet, go to the nursery and hunt through the dregs left by all the conscientious plant buyers, ignore the pointed looks of the clerks, and bring home some half grown, but sad looking specimens. Ah, me. If it wasn't for the tomatoes I'd say screw it all. I can live for a summer with a boring yard.....
After all dandelions are cheerful and yellow right?
